Harbour View Cottage

A Kiwi History

The Harbour View Cottage is part of an historical Onehunga settler's station developed from 1840 by a family of sailors of Scottish and French origins at the top of the Hill dominating the Manukau Harbour, few yards from the village of Onehunga. "Onehunga" has a double meaning in Maori language: It is "Sandy beach" but also "Place of burial".

The original homestead was the first proper house built on the site in 1870.

Harbour view Terrace, the street where it is located, was  created some years later. Unfortunately part of the "Harbour view" has been obstructed by buildings and growing trees.

The first occupants of the land became boat builders making canoes and barges for the British troops garrisoned at the Jellicoe Hill fort during the Maori wars.  The boat making facility remained in use until 1920 when part of the land was used for the development of the Onehunga school.  The property has now been fully restored and has become an Auckland historical landmark.

The Cottage

The Kauri Colonial Cottage was built just before the turn of the millennium, over the ruins of the original horse stables and well,  re-using many parts of the original construction as a reminder of the past and accurately matching the unique colonial style of the Homestead at the front of the property. This stand-alone accommodation offers all the modern amenities appreciated by businessmen as well couples in search of romance.

Surrounded by a sunny landscaped garden with separate access, car park and private veranda, It can also comfortably accommodate a small family (Up to 4 guests and 1 baby).

The Cottage features an open plan living room (Sits 4) with double sofa bed, armchair and desk, a bathroom on the same level with full laundry facility, a fully equipped kitchenette as well as a large veranda with swing sofa and outdoor dining. The mezzanine double bedroom still has an elevated glimpse overlooking the Manukau Harbour and is accessible by a wooden staircase (Which may be difficult for certain people with impaired mobility).  The entire cottage is air conditioned by a silent heat/cold pump unit.

Entertainment features:

  • Large flat screen TV, Apple TV, Blue Ray DVD player, tuner, blue-tooth speaker

  • Netflix; Free Movie DVD selection.
